Would This Amount of Exercise Be Considered "Moderate"? [Forum]

today I did a "guts, butts, and thighs" class

It felt like a pretty good workout, but I'm in shape so I wasn't sure, I did hear others say how much it made them sore but idk if I will be feeling that.

the class was an hour and afterward I talked to the instructor and asked her how many calories she estimated it burned. she said of course it depends on weight, which I know, but she she estimates it around of 600 because it is an anaerobic class which mixes cardio and strength.

after the class I ran 3 miles, 2 were a jog and 1 was a six minute mile

then i did some more ab workouts and a little more leg workouts for about 20 minutes

would you consider this moderate exercise or hard exercise?

this will probably only be 1 day a week cause the class is only one day a week

tomorrow I will probably run about 5 miles and do about 30-45 min of strength training

wed. i have a soccer game for an hour

thursday: will be a cardio kickboxing class for an hour then probably run 2 miles, then a hip-hop class
after i will do strength for 30 min


fri-sat are usually breaks
but i might go to a club where i dance for at least 2 hours nonstop and thats gotta be some exercise

and another day i'll probably go for a 3-5 mile walk

but overall the weekends are rest days


the main point is would you considerate my exercise moderate or heavy?

Weight Watchers PointsPlus Review: The Snowball Effect

I recently went on vacation. My first vacation in seven years. During that time, I decided to go "no-tech" as part of my vacation relaxation. No Skype. No laptop. No iPad. No e-mail. I was going off-line.


I did think ahead and had every intention of staying on the diet. I even ordered the books that list PointsPlus values for almost everything you can think of. And a special journal to record those PointsPlus values in. After all, I had used this pencil-and-paper method years and years ago. In fact, the first time I joined Weight Watchers, there was no online version.

Then, the snowball effect went into full effect.

It started innocently enough: Someone offered me popcorn at a movie. I have a weakness for popcorn. And movies. And one without the other just makes me feel a little sad. So, I gave in.

I tried to be "good" and measure by handful, but as I reached in for, what was probably the third or fourth, I convinced myself I had conveniently lost count and I said out loud, "What the heck, I won't worry about PointsPlus values today."

For some reason that I've yet to discover, sitting down at my computer and typing in all those foods and beverages and see their values on my screen made it "real" to me, it made me feel like I absolutely had to be accountable. For some reason, going off-line caused some sort of disconnect and I lost my discipline completely: That one slip-up suddenly became my license to eat with wild abandon.

Old habits came back really quickly. I don't even remember having a second thought about that coffee drink I had later that day. With whip? Why, yes, of course. And then it was an order of fries at dinner instead of veggies. And, gosh, was I so tired of diet soda; just one ice tea wouldn't hurt, right? And then the next day happened. And another. And they were all filled with poor choices and empty journal pages.

After all, I was on vacation!

Well, my vacation from my diet has lasted nearly three weeks. Each Sunday I've promise to buckle down come Monday, but I haven't. In the first three months of my review, I lost just over 20 pounds; in a few weeks, I've already gained back two of them. I can see the way this is headed and that snowball effect is going to happen to the scale really soon, too.

I think it's time for my vacation from accountability to be over.

A new report by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found 1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

And 80% of adults do not control their blood pressure or high cholesterol, despite having health insurance and access to low-cost treatment.

High blood pressure and high cholesterol are major risk factors for heart disease. Every year 785,000 U.S. adults have their first heart attack, another 470,000 have their second (or more) heart attack; according to previous CDC data.

The new report, appearing in Vital Signs, also found 1 in 3 adults do not get treatment for high blood pressure; 1 in 2 adults do not have their blood pressure under control; 1 in 3 adults do not get treatment for high cholesterol; and 2 in 3 adults do not have their high cholesterol under control.

A spokesperson for the CDC says we are failing to prevent cardiovascular disease, which is the number one cause of death in the U.S., more attention needs to be on prevention and better educating people.

LDL cholesterol - or "bad" cholesterol - should be less than 160 in otherwise healthy people. Blood pressure should be less than 120 over 80. The CDC says anything higher than 140 over 90 requires intervention.

Heart disease deaths vary from race to race. In 2004, CDC data revealed African Americans are more likely to die from heart disease (25.8% of deaths) than Hispanics and whites, with 22.7% and 27.5% respectively.

According to the American Heart Association, poor diet, high salt intake, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol use, and not taking prescribed medications are all risk factors for high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Randomized controlled trial of 169 moderately obese children, who were 5 to 9 years of age.Parents were targeted as the agents of change, and were randomly assigned to take a six-month health lifestyle course alone, or in combination with a parenting training course.The children's body mass index (BMI) and waist z scores were measured at the end of the parenting training, and then at six-month intervals during a two-year follow-up period.The researchers also studied the impact of the training course on parenting outcomes, measured by questionnaires assessing factors such as parental feelings of satisfaction and efficacy in their role.Statistically significant 10-percent reductions in the BMI and waist z scores for both groups of children over the first six-month period, which was maintained for 24 months.Improvement was also seen in the parenting outcomes.Both groups showed similar improvements, with little difference between the two groups. This is a very successful outcome from a seemingly well-conducted trial. Especially so when you see continued success at the two year mark - rare in the world of long-term weight loss trials.

Programs that teach parents about the basics of healthy eating including shopping, cooking, preparing, all on a budget and with time constraints, would be invaluable towards setting children up for success - both short term and long term. Hopefully this study provides some impetus for putting programs like this into action, particularly for those groups most vulnerable to obesity.

Children's health begins in the home. To be sure, it takes the proverbial village to raise a healthy child, but starting at home with parents is the right idea. Getting children to healthier weights, setting them up for healthier eating later on in life, and improving the eating habits of parents makes for a win, win, win situation.
