High "Good" Cholesterol Helps Men Live Longer


Having high levels of HDL, or "good" cholesterol may help men reach their 85th birthday, claims a new study.
According to the American Heart Association, HDL cholesterol helps remove excess cholesterol from the arteries, lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease; unlike LDL, or "bad" cholesterol which clogs arteries and increases the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
Researchers found men with higher HDL were 28% more likely to turn 85 (i.e. 28% less likely to die), compared to men with lower HDL levels.
Published in The American Journal of Cardiology, scientists analyzed medical records of 650 veterans at age 65 and then put them in groups based on their HDL levels. Researchers discovered men with low HDL were 14% less likely to live to 85 years old; 375 study participants survived to 85.
Additionally, data showed that fewer men with higher HDL cholesterol were overweight, drank too much alcohol (not more than 2 drinks per day), smoked, or had cardiovascular disease.
However, the researchers point out that it is difficult to raise HDL levels, saying that a drug eventually needs to be developed.
But some diet experts point to foods like avocados, lentils, peas, oatmeal, soybeans, and niacin containing foods - such as tomatoes, chicken breast, and mushrooms - help raise HDL cholesterol. Naicin (vitamin B3) helps block cholesterol production in the body.
Heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide. In 2004, the World Health Organization says 1.7 million people died from cardiovascular diseases, such as stroke (5.7 million) and coronary artery disease (7.2 million).

Sugary Drinks Raise Blood Pressure

Sweetened beverages, like soda and fruit drinks, may increase your risk of high blood pressure, claims a new study.

Findings showed that every "extra" can of sugary soda consumed increased both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preventions warns that any drink containing high-fructose corn syrup, fructose, fruit juice concentrates, honey, sugar, syrup, corn syrup, sucrose, or dextrose is considered a "sugar-sweetened beverage."

Published in the journal Hypertension, researchers reviewed data on 2,696 volunteers, ages 40 to 59, from United States and Britain. And over three weeks, study participants were asked four times to report what they had eaten in the last 24 hours, give urine samples, and have their blood pressure checked.

Data revealed for every extra can of soda or sugary beverage drank each day, individuals had an average of 1.6 mmHg higher systolic blood pressure reading and an average of 0.8 mmHg higher diastolic reading. So the researchers recommend people limit soda consumption.

Additionally, the scientists found that people who consumed more sugary drinks typically had unhealthier diets; more calories and less fiber and minerals.

The American Heart Association encourages reduced intake of added sugar due to potential health risks, including high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.

A Virginia Tech study showed 48 overweight subjects on a diet who drank a two-cup serving of water 30 minutes before each meal for three months lost four and half pounds more than those who didn't drink the water.

The researchers concluded the water drinkers experienced a sense of fullness that helped them eat less. Allowing between 10 to 30 minutes to pass before you eat is the trick -- the water has time to have its filling effect, but any longer than 30 minutes and it's probably too late to benefit from the fullness-factor.

The Millenium Diet

The Millenium Diet was created by doctor Mark Davis, based on his own research into the diets of his patients.

While examining their diets, he noted specific foods and food groups which caused weight gain problems. Dr Davis found that when certain foods were reduced, or eliminated completely, his patients were able to lose weight loss at a rate of four to eight pounds per week.

The Millennium Diet is basically a low-carb and high-protein diet. From the Millenium Diet website,

Insulin is a major factor in glucose metabolism. One of its lesser known functions is as a component of fat metabolism. When insulin increases this hormone sets off a cascade of other enzymes which enhance fat deposition in the body. The converse also occurs, because high insulin levels block the breakdown of fat. This program takes advantage of these facts by selecting foods that do not challenge insulin levels. Therefore, the body will burn fat instead of sugar. You lose weight.

A typical day on this diet might look something like this:

Mindfulness Matters

A recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health studied the eating habits of more than 100 binge eaters.

The researchers found that those who practiced mindfulness activities were able to reduce the frequency of their binges from four times a week to once a week, a result not seen in the "non-mindful" group. The mindfulness group also said they were able to feel more in-control around food.
